Building a Stage for the Community: Our New Outdoor Vineyard Venue
March 10, 2025

Some of the best moments at a winery happen when the wine stops being the main event and becomes the backdrop for something bigger—a concert under the oaks, laughter echoing across the vines, a community coming together to celebrate life in wine country.

That vision drove us to build something we'd been dreaming about for years: a proper outdoor stage at Hook & Ladder Winery. Not just a platform for performers, but a gathering place where music, wine, and community could converge in the heart of Russian River Valley.

In early 2025, that dream became reality.

Why Build a Stage?

Hook & Ladder has always been more than a tasting room. Our fire truck. Our legacy as one of Russian River Valley's founding wine families. Our commitment to community—these aren't just branding; they're who we are.

We'd been hosting events for years, bringing in musicians, supporting local nonprofits like First Responder Therapy Dogs, and opening our doors to neighbors and visitors alike. But we were always making do—temporary setups, borrowed equipment, spaces that worked but weren't quite right.

We wanted something permanent. Something intentional. A venue that said, "This is where Sonoma County comes to celebrate."

The Build

Building a stage in a vineyard isn't like building one anywhere else. You're working with living landscapes—vines that have been here for decades, soil that matters, trees that frame the view. Every decision had to honor the land while creating space for community.

We chose a spot beneath the shade of mature oaks, with vineyard rows stretching toward the horizon. The stage needed to feel like it belonged—not imposed on the landscape but growing out of it, the way our fire truck barn has become an icon of the property.

The design is simple but sturdy: a raised platform with room for full bands, sound equipment that doesn't compromise quality for outdoor conditions, and sightlines that let everyone—whether seated on the lawn or standing with a glass of Pinot—feel part of the show.

Most importantly, it had to work for performers. Musicians deserve a real stage, not an afterthought. We wanted artists to step up and think, "I can do something special here."

The Launch: Spring 2025

When we opened the stage in spring 2025, it felt like the whole community showed up. Friends we'd known for years. New faces discovering Hook & Ladder for the first time. Families sprawled on blankets. Wine Club members claiming their favorite spots.

The music started, and suddenly the stage wasn't just wood and speakers—it was alive. The vineyard became an amphitheater. The oaks became a canopy. The Russian River Valley sunset became the lighting design.

We'd built something that would outlast us—a gift to the community and to the artists who'd make it their own.

What's Next: No Cell Sundays & Beyond

The stage has already become home to our No Cell Sundays concert series—a celebration of unplugging, unwinding, and enjoying live music the old-fashioned way. Leave your phone with us, get a complimentary tasting, and remember what it feels like to be fully present.

But the stage is bigger than any single series. It's for:

  • Community fundraisers supporting organizations like First Responder Therapy Dogs
  • Wine Club release parties where members celebrate new vintages together
  • Private events where couples get married beneath the vines
  • Local artists who deserve a platform in wine country
  • Seasonal celebrations that mark the rhythms of vineyard life

We built this stage for everyone who believes that wine country should feel like community, not just commerce.

More Than a Stage

When you visit Hook & Ladder now, you'll see the stage nestled among the vines, waiting for the next band, the next gathering, the next moment that reminds us why we do this work.

It's a stage. But it's also a promise: that Hook & Ladder will always be a place where the doors are open, the music is live, and the community comes first.

Because the best wines are the ones shared with others. And the best stages are the ones built for everyone.
