Supporting Those Who Serve: First Responder Therapy Dogs
March 4, 2024

At Hook & Ladder Winery, our connection to the first responder community runs deep. Our name itself honors the firefighters who serve our communities with courage and dedication. But we know that serving others comes with a cost—one that's often invisible but deeply felt.

That's why we're proud to support First Responder Therapy Dogs, a remarkable nonprofit organization that's addressing the mental health crisis facing our nation's first responders through the healing power of trained therapy dogs.

The Silent Struggle

Firefighters, paramedics, law enforcement officers, dispatchers, and search and rescue personnel face extreme stress, PTSD, depression, and even suicidal impulses as part of their daily work. Yet within this community, there's often a stigma around seeking help—a reluctance to show vulnerability in a culture that celebrates strength and resilience.

Traditional mental health resources, while valuable, don't always reach those who need them most. Time off and incident debriefs fall short when the emotional weight of the job accumulates day after day, call after call.

A Different Kind of Support

First Responder Therapy Dogs offers something different: a stigma-free mental health tool that meets first responders where they are. With over 500 certified therapy dog teams spanning 47 states, these remarkable animals provide emotional support directly to on-duty heroes—no appointment needed, no judgment rendered.

The science backs it up. Research demonstrates that therapy dogs reduce stress and anxiety, lower blood pressure, and elevate mood. A moment with a therapy dog can transform a difficult shift, offering calm amid chaos and a smile breaking through tension.

In 2025 alone, First Responder Therapy Dogs reached over 70,000 first responders nationwide. That's 70,000 moments of comfort, 70,000 wagging tails, 70,000 reminders that it's okay to pause and breathe.

Our Commitment

Hook & Ladder Winery has hosted events supporting First Responder Therapy Dogs and remains committed to this vital mission. Whether through fundraising gatherings at our vineyard, spreading awareness about their work, or simply showing up for the first responders in our own Sonoma County community, we believe in using our platform to make a difference.

The organization's Executive Director was recently named a CNN Hero—recognition that has opened doors and amplified their ability to support first responders across the country. We're honored to stand alongside them in this work.

How You Can Help

First Responder Therapy Dogs is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit that relies entirely on donations to bring their services to first responders. Fire departments, police stations, and dispatch centers don't fund these visits—community support makes them possible.

A Shared Mission

At Hook & Ladder Winery, we believe wine country hospitality extends beyond our tasting room. It's about community, connection, and taking care of those who take care of us.

First responders give everything to keep us safe. The least we can do is ensure they have the support they need—whether that comes from a therapy dog's gentle nudge, a community that cares, or a winery willing to use its voice for good.

To the firefighters, paramedics, law enforcement officers, dispatchers, and all who serve: thank you. We see you. We support you. And we're honored to stand with organizations like First Responder Therapy Dogs who are making a real difference in your lives.
